Esquire’s Adrienne Westenfeld caught up with me just before the premiere of the Shining Girls adaptation on Apple TV+ was released at the end of April. We talk aspects of the book that ended up being adapted for screen and my thoughts on the changes:
“True crime is a form of fairy tale. Stories about the big, bad wolf, [are] often intended as a moral warning to be aware of the things lurking in the dark. Maybe serial killers are easier to contend with than the sexism, misogyny, and violence women suffer on a daily basis. You can take comfort in the fact that you’re not likely to be taken by a serial killer. The chances are so low, compared to intimate partner violence.”
“AW: Parts of The Shining Girls are brutal, but Kirby grabs you by the hand and pulls you through. You can’t look away.
LB: You can’t look away. We absolutely cannot look away.“
